A native of Maryland, he completed his undergraduate work at Pennsylvania State University and proceeded to medical school at the University of Florida, graduating in 1977. He completed his residency in OB/GYN at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1981 and began private practice in Oregon. He joined Catawba Women's Center in 1987. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). His love for his family, bridge and golf fill his evenings and weekends.

A Louisiana native, he graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1991. He joined Catawba Women's Center in 1995, upon completion of his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is Board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). His wife, daughter, and son fill his time away from the office and keep him running.

A native of Massachusetts, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1990. He joined Catawba Women's Center in 1994, upon completion of his Residency in OB/GYN at the University Medical Center/Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). His wife and three children are as active as he is on an ongoing basis.

A Statesville native, he graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1974. He joined Catawba Women's Center after completing his Internship and Residency in OB/GYN at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 1978. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Dr. Miller is past president of the Southern Gynecological and Obstetrical Society as well as the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He has two sons and a wife who enjoy WFU basketball as much as he does. Fly-fishing is a close second. His clinical interests include Disorders of Pelvic Floor Support, Urinary Incontinence Surgery, and Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery.

Dr. Peterson, a native of Michigan, settled in Hickory in 1977. He completed medical school at the University of Washington in 1971 then continued his residency at the Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After practicing Obstetrics & Gynecology in Hickory since 1977, he joined Catawba Women’s in 2003. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He fills his weekends with his passion for photography and family.

An Ohio native, she graduated from Stanford University undergraduate in 1986 and Wright State University School of Medicine in 1991. She completed her internship and residency in OB/GYN at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and began private practice in Asheboro, NC. She joined Catawba Women's Center in 1998. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). She stays busy as a mom of three when she is not in the office, pool or singing.

A native of Florida, he graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1997. He joined Catawba Women's Center after completing his Internship and Residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine at Jacksonville in 2001. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). His energetic family and their love of the outdoors keep him going strong through the weekends.

Dr. Whitton graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1999. She joined Catawba Women's Center in 2003 after completing her OB/GYN residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Her husband and two boys are as happy as she is to be in Hickory, where they are active in sports and outdoor activities, including soccer and dressage (often referred to as “horse ballet”). Her clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery techniques (including daVinci Robotic Surgery), surgical and nonsurgical management of urinary incontinence, and preventive care and healthy lifestyle choices.

A native of West Virginia, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1961 and stayed to complete his residency in 1965. Dr. Wotring served in the Air Force for 2 years, then came to Hickory in 1968 to begin private practice. He was one of the founding partners of Catawba Women’s Center which opened in 1972. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is married to Vivian and they have two children, a daughter, Alison, and a son, Jay. Having been surrounded by women most of his life, he cherishes his five granddaughters!

Nurse Practitioner

A native of Massachusetts, she received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from Salem State College in 1976. She is a 1995 graduate from East Tennessee State University with a Master of Science degree in nursing as an advanced generalist. Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, she is approved to practice as a family nurse practitioner by the NC Board of Nursing and NC Medical Board. Sue joined CWC in 1998. In her spare time she and her family enjoy spending time on Lake Norman.

Nurse Practitioner

Pam Monroe is proud to call Catawba County her home. She completed her undergraduate nursing studies at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Her Nurse Practitioner certificate is granted from Planned Parenthood/Continuing Education at the University of Pennsylvania. She has a Master of Science in Nursing from MCP Hahnemann University. Pam’s nursing experience includes: labor and delivery, Maternal/Child healthcare and postpartum visits. She has also provided health outreach classes, such as Lamaze, and has served as a nursing clinical instructor for Catawba Valley Community College and Lenoir-Rhyne College. She is certified by NCC. Pam was a member of the CWC family for several years and is happy to return as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Pam’s hobbies include exercising and spending time with her family. Her clinical interests include Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation for Urinary Incontinence, Management of Menopause, Pre-Conception Counseling, and Contraceptive Management.

Nurse Practitioner

A Statesville native, she received her Registered Nurse degree from Davis Hospital School of Nursing, BS in Nursing from Gardner Webb University, and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner certification from Emory University School of Medicine. She is nationally certified in Inpatient Obstetrics and as a Women’s Health Care Practitioner. Her approval to practice is from the NC Board of Nursing and NC Medical Board. Katrina joined CWC in 1998. When she’s not working, you’ll likely find her at the beach! Her clinical interests include Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation for Urinary Incontinence, Transition to Menopause, Contraception, and Pre-Conception Counseling.

Certified Nurse Midwife

A native of North Carolina with 20 years of nursing experience, she received her BS Degree in Nursing from UNC Greensboro. In 2000, she graduated from the Nurse Midwifery program at the East Carolina University with a Masters in Nursing. She is certified by the American College of Nursing and the NC Board of Medical Examiners. Jamie joined CWC in 2000. Her family is constantly busy, with one daughter following in her footsteps.

Margaret A. Marsden, RNC, CNM, IBCLC

Certified Nurse Midwife

A native of New York, Margaret’s first degree is from Duke University where she majored in French Language and Literature. Margaret later discovered the call to midwifery and completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UNC Chapel Hill. In 1994, she graduated from the Nurse Midwifery program at Oregon Health Sciences University with a Masters in Nursing. She is certified by the American College of Nursing and the NC Board of Medical Examiners and joined Catawba Women’s Center in 2005. A passionate advocate for breastfeeding, Margaret is also a Certified Lactation Consultant. When not working, she and her husband stay quite busy with their three children and their school activities. The Marsden’s also share their home with two dogs, a cat, and two ferrets. She enjoys agility training with Bree, her Australian Shepherd. Margaret delights in sharing her passions for women’s health and midwifery by speaking to school and civic groups and has also volunteered for the Pregnancy Care Center of Hickory.

Sharon Kay Varner, RNC, CNM

Certified Nurse Midwife

A native of Ohio, Sharon earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University in Norfolk. In 2004, she graduated from East Carolina University with a Masters in Nursing. She is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwifery. Sharon is a Christian and considers midwifery and women’s health a calling on her life from God. Sharon is zealous about women’s health and has a genuine concern and compassion for people and their health care needs. Sharon is married with four grown children. She has two beautiful grandchildren and was blessed to be in attendance as they were delivered! Sharon and her husband, Tony, spend their free time enjoying outdoor activities like boating, skiing, and hiking.
